The Wichita
Mountains National Wildlife Refuge near Lawton is an
excellent place to view collared lizards.
These medium-size lizards can be seen perched atop large boulders
in the fields there. The video still at right shows one such
lizard.
North of the NWR, at Fort
Cobb State Park, many collared lizards inhabit the reservoir
dam (right; view from the eastern end of the dam, the
lake is towards the horizon). The presence of the
lizards on the dam is somewhat of a success story--the lizards have capitalized
on the new habitat, as the dam provides plenty of rocky territory
for them and insects are available in the tall grass and woods
nearby.
